What is house edge and what are inside and outside bets in Roulette. A guide for beginners

If you are a serious roulette player or you are planning to learn more about roulette the first thing you should look into is roulette odds, but before we go there we need to explain “House Edge” which I m sure you’ve heard about/ or will hear about if you are beginner.

House Edge Explanation

There’s something really important we need to point out before we start explaining roulette odds and percentages for every roulette bet and that’s the concept of House Edge. So what is house edge? A simple explanation is that house edge is the built in advantages that different casinos have, it’s the odds they have in their favour and the average number of profit they have per player and his bets. So the house edge tells us roughly how much the house is going to make on average. At this stage its really important to understand that you can’t cheat/ change or influence the “House Edge”. The House Edge figures are mathematically calculated based and are set for every casino game. You will often see a lot of people/sites coming up with new roulette systems and bots that apparently will win you loads of money. You should never trust them, most of these people all scammers trying to get your money. Focus on having a good strategy and playing at trusted established casinos like the ones we list on our homepage.

Outside and Inside Bets Explanation

Outside bets consist of 6 different bets that you have more of a chance of winning but the payouts are quite low. If you are a beginner I would stick to outside bets as you can play for longer and get to understand the game better.

  1. 1 to 18 also knows as a "low" bet, the payout is 1:1 and you win if the ball lands on a number between 1 and 18.

  2. 19 to 36 also knows as a "high" bet, again here the payout is 1:1 and you win if the ball lands on a number between 19 and 36

  3. Red or Black bets, which means that you stick with one colour and payout 1 to 1

  4. Even/Odd bets, this is also a straightforward bet that pays out 1 to 1

  5. Vertical/Dozen bet, you can choose 1-12, 13-24, etc… this bet pays out 2 to 1

  6. Column bet, you can bet on a column and the bet pays out 2 to 1

On the other hand inside bets consist of again 6 different bets that have less chances of winning you money but if they do the payouts are high.

  1. Straight bet - this is the one you see in movies, you just bet on one number. The payout is a hearty 35 to 1 but its extremely difficult to win, your chances are very low.

  2. Split bet - You are given the chance to place your bet on 2 number sitting next to each other as in side by side, This one pays 17 to 1

  3. You are given the chance to place your bet on 2 number sitting next to each other as in side by side, This one pays 17 to 1

  4. Street/Trio bet -Similarly here you are putting your money in 3 numbers sitting next to each other. This pays out 11 to 1

  5. Corner Bet -you pick 4 numbers, on a square. The payout of 8 to 1

  6. Six line bet- Similar to the trio bet except with 6 numbers. The payout is 5 to 1

The reality of it is that there’s no “ideal winning strategy” for roulette, it’s about what works best for you, there’s loads of strategies out there and the ones I trust are the ones that require a combination of bets in order to increase the probability of winning and to reduce statistically the amount of times you lose. If you are a beginner I would go with the following strategy / outside bet until you understand the game, this will easy you in and allow you to enjoy the game:

Table minimum outside bet

To maximise your chances of winning and to ease you in to the world of roulette I recommend you stick to the table minimum and go for the outside bets. We recommend sticking to one colour red or black which means you are covering 18 out of 38 and the bet pays 1 to 1.
